A New Genetic Test Prostate Cancer

Researchers have developed a new genetic test that can predict the predisposition of a particular case of cancer death. This method of diagnosis could help prevent tens of thousands of unnecessary surgeries every year.

Unlike many malignant tumors, not all types of prostate cancer require active treatment. Many of them are slowly progressive and does not represent a particular threat to life. Thus the main task of the oncologist is to distinguish between «Tiger» from «kittens» and find out when you have to take active measures, and when you can get some time without them.

As noted by Professor Colin Cooper of the British Institute of Cancer Research, this method of genetic evaluation will immediately recognize the nature of the aggressiveness of prostate cancer.

He also adds that in most cases of prostate cancer men undergoing radical surgery, whereas this requires only one-third of patients.
As is well known radical surgical treatment of prostate cancer is accompanied by various side effects, so any new, which may reduce the need for this, is of great importance for the quality of life of these patients.

Scientists previously knew that prostate cancer is usually a fusion gene TMPRSS2 and However, new studies showed that 6,6% of the cases, the merger is doubled, which was accompanied by increased aggressiveness of cancer. This is a violation of genes called the «2 + Edel». In patients with 2 + Edel have only 25% of 8-year survival rate, compared with 90% in those patients, where such anomalies are not genes.
While that is not clear what impact the death of a doubling of genes. Perhaps with more forms of protein, this is required for tumor growth. But whatever the mechanism, 2 + Edel is considered to be indicators of risk, which points to the need to treat prostate cancer. Currently, the most common indicator of the need to treat prostate cancer is the scale Glisson.
