Prostate biopsy

Cancer occurs when a tumor forms or group of abnormal cells that reproduces uncontrollably. If from the results of examination and tests, the doctor suspects may have cancer, you will undergo a fine needle biopsy for prostate tissue samples and analyze them to determine whether cancer.

Tissue Sampling

The biopsy takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Before you begin, you may make him an enema or suppository to bring you a bowel movement. Antibiotics are given at least an hour before the biopsy. During the procedure:

 

  • You will take antibiotics to prevent infection.
  • You may be given a sedative, local anesthesia or pain medication.
  • Laying aside, we introduce a small probe into the rectum to obtain images of the prostate on a monitor. This procedure is called a transected ultrasound.
  • Guided by the ultrasound image, the doctor uses a thin needle to remove tissue samples from various parts of the prostate.
